A-Z of Charles Martin Watch Company
October 30, 2017

An A to Z of Charles Martin Watch Company and luxury watches.  Read on to learn more about us and find out what makes us tick!

Accuracy – accuracy has been a priority for as long as people have been making watches. The fascination behind achieving precision timekeeping in a watch with gears and a mainspring, rather than a battery and an integrated circuit, is a big part of what’s kept traditional watchmaking alive in the 21st century.

Breitling – Just one of the luxury brands available at Charles Martin Watch Company.  Breitling is a Swiss luxury watchmaker based in Grenchen, Switzerland. Founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier. Breitling is known for precision-made chronometers useful to aviators.

Charles Martin Watch Company – What else would C stand for?  We are a dedicated luxury watch repair and service centre as well as a retail outlet for new and pre owned luxury watch brands.

Daniel Wellington – We are an official stockist of Daniel Wellington watches. The Daniel Wellington watch is without any doubt suitable for every occasion.  Regardless if you are attending a black tie event, playing a game of tennis or enjoying a sunny day at the beach club – the Daniel Wellington is a beautiful companion.

Escapement – The escapement is the heart of the watch.  It’s how a mechanical watch tells time. The sudden stopping of the escapement’s tooth is what generates the characteristic “ticking” sound heard in operating mechanical clocks and watches.

Facebook – If you don’t already follow us on Facebook, you should! It’s where we list all our latest stock so you’ll be first to know what we have for sale as well as any news or offers.

Guarantee – All our watches come fully guaranteed and all servicing comes with a 24 month guarantee on work carried out.

Hublot – Another one of our luxury brands. Born out of founder Carlo Crocos desire to create his own watch in the 1970’s, luxury Swiss brand Hublot was founded in 1980, and instantly became world renowned for its innovative rubber strap – never seen before in the watch industry.

IWC – International Watch Co., also known as IWC, is a luxury Swiss watch manufacturer located in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and founded by American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones in 1868.

Jaeger-LeCoultre – Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are effortlessly stylish, but the beauty is more than skin deep.  With almost two centuries of watchmaking experience, this prestigious company presents some of the very best watchmaking to have ever existed.

Key Wound Watches – Once upon a time all watches were wound by sticking a key in the back and turning it. Key wound watches quickly lost popularity when stem winding watches were invented.

Lady Datejust – The Rolex brand’s diminutive 28-millimeter-diameter women’s collection, which debuted in the late 1950s.

Magnetism – Since many critical watch parts are made of steel, a watch that’s accidentally exposed to a strong magnetic field will be unable to tell the time. If your watch is magnetised it will have to be demagnetised to again work properly.

New Arrivals – Quality pre-owned luxury watches arrive every day.  Dip into our world and discover the latest range of beautiful timepieces which are fully serviced and carry a full 12-month warranty.

Omega – Another one of the great brands available at Charles Martin Watch Company. Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet and symbolises accomplishment and perfection – qualities that have been inherent in every OMEGA watch since the company’s founding by Louis Brandt in La Caux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1848.

Pre-Owned – We specialise in pre owned luxury watches from brands such as Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Breitling, Bulgari, IWC, Audemars Piguet, Chopard, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Movado, Hublot, Panerai, Patek Philippe, Piaget, Tag Heuer and Vacheron Constantin.

Quartz – Though they’re commonplace nowadays, quartz watches were not only the very hottest thing in watchmaking, but also coveted luxury items when they were first released. The very first quartz watch ever was Seiko’s Astron, which went on sale in Japan on Christmas, 1969, and cost as much as a new car.

Repairs – If your watch has been damaged or is not performing as expected, a repair together with a service is usually preferable. If you are unsure as to the nature of the fault please call us on 01889 560002 or send it to us for a free assessment.

Servicing – We offer a full 7 day service. A luxury watch usually contains over 160 parts.  To safeguard the watches accuracy and performance, manufacturers recommend that you service your timepiece every three to five years.  A full service ensures that your watch is reverted back to its showroom functionality and precision time keeping.

TW Steel – We are also official stockists of TW Steel. A simple conversation in 2005 on the popularity of oversized watches was all the catalyst needed for Ton Cobelens to take a bold step into action.  Seizing the opportunity he designed and produced the first ever collection from his house.  Today the motivation remains the same, to make something that is visually stunning and a thrill to buy.

Uttoxeter – The location of our very first retail store.  You can find us at 9 Market Place, Uttoxeter.

Valuations – Whether you are interested in selling your watch or would simply like an insurance valuation, our specialist horologist can help.  You can complete a form on our website and our valuation team will contact you with a price.

Watch – W is for watch of course! Whether you want to sell your existing watch, trade it in for something better or simply want to buy a new one.  We’ve got you covered.  Join our Facebook page for our latest stock or get in touch for a free valuation.

X Factor – What every luxury timepiece should have.  Whatever your taste, we’re sure to have something to suit your style and budget.

Year – A year presents an interesting challenge for watchmakers who create watches with a date display.  The challenge is that there aren’t a whole number of days in a year. Instead, it’s about 365 and a quarter days to make one trip around the Sun. The watchmaker’s solution is a type of watch called a perpetual calendar. Such watches contain a tiny mechanical computer that automatically detects the correct length of each month, and always displays the correct date — even at the end of February in a leap year.

Zirconium Dioxide – Zirconium dioxide is a tough, highly scratch resistant material that’s part of a big trend in the last decade of watch making to replace steel or aluminium case parts with scratch proof ceramics.
